The Hollywood Reporter: Chloe Grace Moretz Navigates Conversion Camp in 'Miseducation of Cameron Post' Trailer
Moretz plays the titular character, who is forced into attending a Christian conversion therapy camp to "cure" her sexuality, in the coming-of-age film.
The first look at Sundance darling The Miseducation of Cameron Post has arrived. FilmRise released the trailer for the coming-of-age film starring Chloe Grace Moretz on Tuesday and in the clip, Cameron (Moretz) navigates the emotional aftermath of being forced into attending gay conversion therapy camp after she is caught with another girl in the back seat of a car on prom night.
Upon entering the Christian camp called God's Promise, Cameron is told she is "at an age where you are especially vulnerable to evil." The preview shows Moretz's character having trouble conforming to the camp's strict rules and strange practices, including off-putting prayers and uncomfortable counseling sessions.
"Couldn't we just walk off?" Cameron asks at one point, looking to run away from God's Promise with her new friends and fellow camp-goers, Adam and Jane, played by Forrest Goodluck and Sasha Lane, respectively. The film also stars John Gallagher Jr. and Jennifer Ehle.
Elsewhere in the trailer, Cameron is told she needs to "stop thinking of [herself] as a homosexual," to which she responds: "I don't think of myself as a homosexual. I don't really think of myself as anything." Adding later, "Fuck this place. I'm tired of feeling disgusted with myself."
Back in March, it was revealed that FilmRise — the New York-based distributor behind Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief and the Jon Hamm-Lois Smith starrer Marjorie Prime — acquired North American rights to The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.
The movie — set in 1993 and based on Emily M. Danforth's celebrated novel of the same name — garnered rave reviews at the annual Park City fest in January and received the coveted Grand Jury prize. The fact that it took the film two months to sell given the strong reviews came as a surprise; Grand Jury prize winners usually move during the run of the festival.
Director Desiree Akhavan penned the screenplay with Cecilia Frugiuele. The film is produced by Michael B. Clark and Alex Turtletaub of Beachside and Cecilia Frugiele of Parkville Pictures alongside Jonathan Montepare. Akhavan and Parkville’s Olivier Kaempfer executive produced. Beachside financed the film.
"With The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Desiree has created a timely yet timeless, hilarious yet heartwrenching story,” FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher has said of the movie. "We are proud to bring this powerful film from a rising director to wider audiences, in a time when the story is as profound and pertinent as ever."
The Miseducation of Cameron Post is expected to hit theaters later this year. Watch the trailer above.
